The mixed-doubles team competed in the state tournament last weekend for Grapevine, and while they lost in their quarterfinal match, Martinez said he was very pleased with their effort.
"We played as well as could be expected," Martinez said. "They had a girl by the name of Amanda DiCarlo that was just phenomenal. She was the difference in the match."
Holt and Hanno lost to DiCarlo and Brandon Farine of Houston Clearlake 6-2, 6-3.
Martinez said that looking back on the season as a whole, he is very satisfied with the way things unfolded.
"It has been tremendous," Martinez said. "Honestly, if I were to look back and say who was a sure thing, I would say Alex and Haley. To get them out of district, and our girls doubles team out, and Charlie [Sauer] as our boys singles out, and then go to regionals and come out with our mixed doubles going to state when they were seeded four, it is incredible. I think we were the only No. 2 in district to come out and make it to state out of the whole region, so I am tremendously satisfied."
The only regional qualifier the Mustangs are losing from this year’s squad is Hanno, and Grapevine has another reason to be optimistic for next year as well, as its new facility should be up and running for the fall season.
"It’s coming along," Martinez said. "Our problem has been, with the rain we’re getting, we’re at the point where the roof has to be put on, but all the rain that we got put our contractor about five jobs behind. Nothing else can go on inside the building until the roof goes up … so we’re looking at probably being up by the middle of June."
Martinez said things are looking good for next season and said he feels he will have a strong team in place for the fall.
"It should be better than this one," Martinez said. "We’ve got everybody coming back besides Alex, and we’ve got some younger kids that have come on and improved as well as a talented young man coming up from middle school that should fit right in. I think we will be ready to go."
