Curriculum Director Earns Doctorate

John Doughney, executive director of curriculum and instruction in the Grapevine-Colleyville school district, has earned a doctorate in curriculum and instruction from the University of North Texas. Doughney began his doctoral studies program in fall 2004. He say the experience has impacted him positively in other areas of his life.

"Professionally it has exposed me to new ideas and perspectives," he said. "Personally it has reaffirmed my belief that intellectual renewal is critical."

For Doughney, the most enjoyable part of the doctoral process was the constant learning of different perspectives. The most challenging part of the process was balancing work, school and family obligations. He admits it was difficult at times to stay focused on the end result, as the process is quite demanding of time and energy. However, he looks back now with a sense of accomplishment.

"This has been the most challenging and rigorous endeavor I have experienced in either my professional or personal life," he said. "After four years of persistence, I am very gratified to bring this process to a successful conclusion."

Doughney has been in GCISD since January 2001, serving as director of assessment and curriculum before being named executive director of curriculum and instruction in July 2007.
