Original paintings, photographs, drawings and handwritten lyrics by rock artists from the 1960s through today will be available to view and to purchase.
Radio station 98.7 KLUV and the Gaylord Texan are sponsoring the Rock Art Show, a traveling collection of rare rock ’n’ roll artwork and photographs.
"A lot of musicians went to art school" said Scott Segelbaum, curator of the Rock Art Show. "Artistic talent in music often translates to other arts."
The show is a collection of work that spans the history of rock 'n’ roll. The items on display are not simply memorabilia or autographs, but true works of fine art created by the rockers and acquired through legitimate sources. All pieces are authenticated by Segelbaum.
"Every piece is purchased through the artist’s agents or galleries," he said. "Nothing is from e-bay or auctions. If it says Ringo Starr, we have purchased the piece directly from Ringo’s art dealer."
Artists represented in the show include: Paul McCartney, Jerry Garcia, John Entwistle, Jimi Hendrix, Ron Wood, Bob Dylan, Carlos Santana, David Bowie, Robby Krieger, Tony Bennett, Jon Anderson, John Lennon, Ringo Starr, John Mellencamp, Brian Wilson and Micky Dolenz.
Photographs from recording sessions of such artists as the Eagles, Pink Floyd, Doors, Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Crosby, Stills & Nash, Elton John, Bruce Springsteen, Johnny Cash and Frank Sinatra will also be on display.
Artwork from The Beatles’ Saturday morning cartoon show and movie, Yellow Submarine will be featured along side handwritten song lyrics, original album cover art and concert tour posters from various artists.
"I like to say the show covers the Rat Pack to the Red Hot Chili Peppers," Segelbaum said. "The great thing about this exhibit is that it is cross-generational. Parents can bring their kids, and everyone can find artists they recognize."
Each piece of art is available for purchase at prices ranging from $10 to $5,000. Whether purchasers are sentimental fans or serious art investors, there is something to be found within their budget.
The Rock Art Show has been traveling the country for about10 years. This marks the second time the show has been in the Metroplex and has been sponsored by 98.7 KLUV.
"KLUV is a perfect match for us. They play all the artists in the show," Segelbaum said. "The Rock Art Show is essentially a visual representation of their playlist."
98.7 KLUV presents Rock Art Show at the Riverwalk Café at the Gaylord Texan Resort in Grapevine, with no charge for admission. Hours of operation are Friday and Saturday, May 23 and 24, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Sunday and Monday, May 25 and 26, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Parking at the resort is $10 for self-park and $15 for valet.
